Assets declaration is unconstitutional – NPP

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), is kicking against the Electoral Commission’s demand for presidential and parliamentary nominees to declare their assets with the Auditor General to make them eligible to contest the December elections.

The EC in a statement signed by its Head of Communications, Eric Kofi Dzakpasu, asked candidates to take note of the requirement to declare their assets to the Auditor-General in order to meet the eligibility criteria.

But speaking on Eyewitness News, the acting General Secretary of the NPP, Mr. John Boadu, said although the NPP’s candidate will readily declare his assets, the law as it stands, only binds those already holding public office, and not those seeking to be office.

  • Bawumia bought his position as running mate – Anyidoho

Deputy General Secretary of the  National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho is alleging that, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the running mate of Nana Akufo-Addo bribed Nana Addo to pick him as a Vice President.

According to him, he [Bawumia] was picked by Akufo Addo in 2008 after he contracted his [Akufo Addo’s] brother to redenominate the Ghana cedi.

He was reacting to claims by the NPP at a press conference yesterday that, President Mahama is abusing his incumbency and buying votes.

Dr. Bawumia has also lambasted President Mahama and described him as a bad driver and corrupt. The running mate of Nana Addo on tour of the Central Region told a gathering of supporters of the party that, President Mahama and his appointees are stealing from the state hence, the hardship we are facing.

But in a rebuttal Koku Anyidoho who has for some time now taken on Dr. Bawumia over the credibility of the register, said, the former deputy governor of the Central Bank lacks the credibility to accuse someone of being corrupt.

    • Mary Grant is a formidable woman – Rawlings

Ghana’s former President, Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, have described the late Dr. Mrs. Mary Grant as a “formidable woman who never turned away from hard work.”

The couple said in a statement that Dr. Grant would “really be missed because she had great ideas on the development of Ghana and touched many lives.”

Speaking on Tuesday during a courtesy call on the family of Dr. Grant, who passed away on September 18, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who spoke on behalf of the Rawlings family said Dr. Grant’s “impatience” and strong desire to get things done was the major motivating factor, which encouraged President Rawlings to want to work with her.

The former First Lady said Dr. Grant had interests in health, sanitation and drainage issues and was always pushing to get such projects implemented.

However, he said the victim lost his balance and fell right in front of the train just when it had started moving.

The eyewitness noted that, the train driver spotted the victim from afar and consistently sounded the horn even to the dismay of the passer-by but the victim ignored it and was crushed in the process.

The victim’s brain, he said gushed out of his crushed skull while his limbs and entire body were totally run over and dismembered by the train on the railway line at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.
